What is discourse analysis?ĭiscourse analysis is the study of social life, understood through analysis of language in its widest sense (including face-to-face talk, non-verbal interaction, images, symbols and documents). We conclude by showing how discursive studies might add a ‘new’ methodological dimension to family practice research. In the second part of this paper, we explore how to do discourse analysis (using data from a recent study in family practice) and consider common debates. But what do we actually mean when we talk about ‘discourse analysis’ and how is it done? To answer this question, the first section of this paper focuses on some basic theoretical ideas and concepts, drawing on studies relevant to primary care to provide readers with an understanding of the features of discourse analysis and the different approaches available.
